While solar cells based on Cu-chalcopyrite absorber materials have shown nearly 20 % efficiencies, the best modules reach only ~12 %, showing that there is significant room for improvement. Because these cells are made of polycrystalline material, grain boundaries and surfaces are obvious points to focus on.\nThe project brings together several groups that have contributed to understanding electronic effects of polycrystallinity in solar cells.\nWhereas grain boundaries are mostly characterized by averaging methods, the project focuses on studies of individual grain boundaries employing scanning probe microscopy methods. This will be combined with preparation, electrical characterization and theoretical models. The results of the project should show the way towards improved cells.
